Damian Light: There was a big headhunter raid last week. Are gangs that much of an issue in Auckland though?

I think that gang crime has always an issue, although some are much worse than others.
From what I’ve seen, people join gangs to belong. They feel they need to be part of something, have some direction and purpose and gangs offer that. Membership in most clubs and groups is declining but gangs offer security and fellowship.
It’s worth noting that gangs are not automatically bad. Absolutely many gangs are tied up with organised crime, but they don’t have to be and not all are.
