Damian Light: Do you see more benefit in making a better, broader public transport system meaning people can train to work from Hamilton or is there more to be seen in urban density / sprawl?

I definitely think that we need to look at enabling public transport an option for those commuting outside of Auckland. Hamilton is an obvious example, with the existing rail connection already served by passenger rail (although currently only tourism). It would also potentially allow people to commute to/from towns along the way.

The debate about sprawl vs high density is missing the point. The solution is both – a mixture of high density, medium density and low density. Not everyone wants one nor are everyone’s lifestyles suited to one – we need a balance of all to match the demand, now and in the future.
