NORTHCOTE: Why are you proud to be in New Zealand?

Damian Light, United Future

I’m fortunate enough to have travelled around the world – I love seeing new (and old) places, trying new food and enjoying the atmosphere of different cultures. But what I love the most about travelling is coming home to NZ.

Despite being a small country, we can still experience the wonders of the world. We live in an incredibly multicultural country, where the world has come to us. Yet we maintain our uniqueness, our Kiwi way of life and our outstanding environment we live in.

It’s so easy to forget how lucky we are to live in such a stunning environment. Everything I come home, I’m reminded how green and clean our country is.

I’m proud to call myself a kiwi!

Anne-Elise Smithson, Greens

I love Aotearoa New Zealand because, having lived in several different countries, I have always on my return home been struck by the natural beauty of our landscapes. Who hasn’t stood in the presence of our mountains, outer islands, rivers or forests and not been totally floored by their magnificence, at least once? It’s a feeling that unites us all.

I am proud to stay in New Zealand because of the uniqueness of our Maori heritage; because of our heritage of fighting for egalitarianism; because of that sense of independence that underpins our culture. We have a history of standing up for what’s right and bravely protesting what’s wrong (nuclear testing, apartheid). For calling a spade a spade, and knowing what side of the fence we are on.
